The concept of placemaking is central to ZIGO's signage design strategy for civic, cultural, and public spaces. We go beyond wayfinding to create signage that contributes to the unique identity and sense of place. For a public park, signage might incorporate natural forms, local wildlife motifs, and educational content about the ecosystem. For a museum, the signage system itself can become part of the exhibition, using materials and design motifs that reflect the collection's theme. We engage with the community and the history of a location to inform a design that is culturally relevant and respectful. In a project for a historic district, we developed a family of signage that used traditional typography and cast iron materials, echoing the area's architectural heritage while providing modern functionality. This approach transforms standard informational signs into meaningful elements that enrich the public's connection to their environment, making spaces not just navigable but also more memorable and engaging.
