When signage starts looking tired, the first instinct is usually to replace everything. Often that isn't necessary. Whether to replace or repair depends on which layer the problem sits in.
Three situations call for replacement. Light output has dropped noticeably: LED modules last a long time, but drivers usually become unstable after three to five years, showing up as dimming, flickering, or letters that only partly light. Repeated patching costs more than doing it once properly. The material itself has failed: rust on outdoor stainless, large-area coating fade, yellowed or cracked acrylic, deformed housings — none of this reverses, and cleaning won't fix it. Or the brand has changed its identity: once the logo, typeface, or brand color updates, old signage stops matching the brochures and the website, and keeping it does more damage than good.

Two situations don't. Surface dirt, water staining, or accumulated grime that looks bad but sits on sound structure — a deep clean and local polishing restores most of the appearance. Or localized problems: loose fixings, one dead letter, a chipped panel. Replace the part.
If you do move ahead, a few practical notes. Measure the site again before ordering — don't work from drawings that are several years old. Facades, piping, and lighting get modified, and signs built to old drawings will clash. Phase the work by area, and for hotels avoid peak guest flow; lobbies and elevator halls are best handled at night. Build one sample location first and confirm color, illumination, and material before rolling out, so you don't discover a problem after everything is installed.
One thing people overlook: a renovation is the best moment to fix the information hierarchy too — which words should be larger, which should be dropped, whether the arrows still point the right way. A sign stays up for years, so it pays to get it right while you're at it.
